The Gospel of Judas
This came out a few weeks before Easter and was the focus of many articles and news shows. The hype seems to have calmed down but with the Da Vinci code movie coming out it will probably be in the focus again soon. Since I finished my spring semester on Friday, I thought I would do a little research about this and looked up an article by my New Testament Professor, Dr. Craig Blomberg. If you would like to read the article yourself you can find it at: http://www.denverseminary.edu/dj/articles2006/0200/0211.php
Here are some main points.
~This is not really a new discovery. It has been known about since 180 A.D. when it was condemned by the early church; however, there have only been references to it and its content no one had an actual copy of the document.
~There is little new in the content as other Gnostic documents contain similar writings and the document itself is very short.
~Of these other Gnostic documents many of them (like the Gospel of Judas) claim to be “gospels” but one should remember that, “no one, to our knowledge, not even the Gnostics themselves, ever proposed that these later Gospels should be included in the New Testament!” ~If you want a better feel for it and still have some questions go buy the book and as Dr. Blomberg says “You’ll have no difficulty sensing in a heartbeat the entirely different philosophical context and worldview in which these documents were written. Your confidence that the church made good choices in its process of canonization will be bolstered.”
